When I was in Honduras in January, my team at the end of our stay spent a short weekend in Copan. The first picture below was a neat little taxi that got us around Copan and nearby sites. The taxi held as many as three people squashed in the back seat and one other person sharing the driver's seat. It was a fun way to get around. The second picture was a neat bird that fascinated me at a bird preserve.

That looks suspiciously like a thai tuk-tuk...they did not have such vehicles when I was last in Honduras...Iwas there about 8 years ago...got lost for a few months in a town called Trujillo..a expat gem of the caribean..most of the area got pounded my hurricane mitch in 1998...I haven't been back...still, fond memories
I was JUST going to ask...is that a TUK-TUK?
How fast can that little taxi go?
Hi adman. They do look alot like a Thai tuk-tuk, don't they? I looked it up in Wiki-pedia after I read your note. I do believe that these small taxis are a recent introduction to Copan, Honduras.
tai, thanks for dropping by.
Hi lucy stern. They're not real powerful when fully loaded and going uphill. But they're excellent for short distances.
Did you visit the Mayan ruins in Copan? This is on my list of places yet to visit.
Hi, zanne. Yes, I did visit the above ground Mayan Ruins in Copan. That'll probably be the subject of an upcoming post. It's well worth it if you have a good guide like we did to give an overview of Mayan life and the meaning of the various structures.
The car looks like tuk tuk in Thai Land, what is the bird name ? If you come to Viet Nam, then you will see a different tuk tuk :)
Hi godknows. Thanks for your commentary about the tuk-tuk. I regret I cannot identify the name of the bird for you. I failed to write it down when I took the picture. However, this bird lives in Macaw Mountain Bird Park and Nature Preserve near Copan, Honduras. They have a web site at http://www.macawmountain.com/index.htm.
Man, the minute I saw this picture I was think Tuk Tuk too!! I'm follwing this blog (Global Roam, and it's on my blogroll) and the couple are currently in Thailand, and they had similar pictures.
AMAZING bird, how exquisite...
crystal, it's fascinating to me how many people identified it as a tuk-tuk. I never had seen in pictures or otherwise a three wheel vehicle quite like these taxis. And as for the bird, they had many other exquisitely colored birds in their bird refuge. They are beautiful.
