A Time To Remember, No. 5, Roasting Marshmellows

The photo below was taken back in 1970; I would have been only twelve years old then. It's not a great picture photographically speaking; but I save it for its memories. Dad and us children used to love roasting marshmellows (and of course eating them) whether it be over a wood fire or charcoal. In this particular picture, dad and one of my younger brothers are roasting marshmellows over charcoal sitting on a shovel. It's my guess that we probably had charcoal grilled hamburgers and hotdogs earlier that evening and now we were re-using the coals for yummy roasted marshmellows. It's the little things that make a quality family time and good memories.

Pretty creative to use a shovel for roasting marshmellows. ;-)

I tried the whole marshmallow thing recently. Over a candle in my room. I did not get it, I guess you have to be brought up with it!
In East-germany we used to have soem kinda dough and roast that over open fire, I used to love that!

crystal, I don't know what made us choose to use a shovel; but it worked. And then we could still easily dispose of the charcoals elsewhere.

Hi monika. I'm not sure roasting marshmellow over a candle would have quite the same flavor as doing it over a wood or charcoal fire. But it sounds like you had a similar custom with a different kind of food in East Germany. Was it a sweet dough?

Some in my family use to like to have their marshmellow actually catch fire so that the outside was all charred black. I liked mine dark brown but not that black.

lovely picture. I did'nt know that marshmallows could be roasted. I'm referring to the spongy sweet candy kinda thing. Are you talking about the plant?

Love those memories!

Thanks godknows. Pictures from our childhood can be really special. They often remind me of the blessings I experienced growing up in my family and inspire me to be a blessing to others.

Thanks for dropping by shelleigh. Glad you found my comment meaningful.

Hi adman. I'll have to keep that tip in mind.

Hi chez. Yes, marshmellows - the sweet spongy candy kind of thing - can be roasted. We usually stick them on a wire, a two-prong fork, or a thin stick to roast them over a wood fire or charcoal until golden brown.

Hi ginnie. Life would be so much more shallow without those memories. Gotta love those memories and continue to create more of them for others and yourself. Often the memories one work to create for others become the best memories for oneself.

The colour is so rich on this photo. Did you make any adjustments with the digital transfer?

Hi san nakji. I scanned the photo via Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0. I adjusted the RGB midtone levels and used Elements' auto levels for contrast, color correction, and sharpness. I'm still not satisfied with the photo; but it's better than the faded original.

Hi, chez. Hope you find as much pleasure in roasted marshmellows as I and my siblings have.

Thanks, san nakji. It is good to hear what other people think regarding my work here.
