Big Bend National Park, No. 1, Cactus Blossoms

This post is a beginning of a scattered series on Big Bend National Park in Texas near the border line with Mexico. The photos were taken in May 1997. The first photo gives the backdrop to all the cactus photos. I was pleased that my trip took me there during cactus blooming time. Unfortunately, I cannot give you the names of them except that I think many of them were prickly pear cactus.

I love cactus so easy to grow.
But mine is never flowered.
I'm not a good cactus-gardener.

On our way down to S. Padre Island a few months ago, we seen the cactus with the yellow flowers. More recently on the way up to the panhandle we seen cactus with purple/pinky kinda of pods on top-maybe fruit. You would think I would know, but not, cause I'm a city girl we don't have any cactus that grow in the concrete.

Thanks for the trip to Big Bend I have not been there...yet. Hey maybe we can get ol' gummy butt to got with us.

Thanks, sage. It is a pretty area.

Hi, cergie. When I lived with mom and dad on the farm, I had some cactus that flowered. But I think you need the right environment to make them bloom.

Hi, samrina. Glad you enjoyed the pics. I am doing well, just busy as ever. :)

Hi, paige. Big Bend is wonderful. And there is much more to see than I have yet shown you; but maybe in future postings. :)

Gracias, coral. Es un gusto volver a saber de ti aquí también. El cacto y los paisajes están muy hermosos.

You know, Tim, it's one thing to take pics of cactus plants but quite another to take them when they're in bloom! How fortunate that you were able to get both! That's one of the things I love about the desert--IT BLOOMS!

The landscape resembles the desert in Italy where a few spaghetti western movies were filmed.

Italy like Big Bend National Park in Texas is: Spettacolare durante l'estate quando i cactus fioriscono, il cielo è riccamente blu e l'acqua è abbondante.

Can you read Italian?

Hi, camila bernades. I'm glad you enjoy the pics. Knowing that people appreciate my postings makes this a fun activity.

Hi, ocean. Cactus flowers usually are impressive and beautiful. They soften up a harsh desert.

Hi, deepak gopi. Thanks for your visit. Glad you enjoyed my photos. I'm only an amatuer photographer.

Hi, ginnie. I was blessed to arrive when the cactus were blooming. It is amazing how beautiful a desert does become when it blooms.

Hi, windowtomymind. That's fascinating the comparison of Big Bend to desert parts of Italy. Actually, I never pictured Italy having deserts. As for the Italian phrase, I don't know Italian; but does it say something like "Spectacular when the cactus flourish, the sky is richly blue, and water is abundant."? I'm guessing the words from my limited knowledge of Spanish and I know that is dangerous.

Cacti are my favourite plants in the world. When I think of America, this is the scene that most often comes to mind :D

I wish I could be there in May when everything is coming to life...Wouldn't it be great to be able to hit every state during the blooming of their natural flowers...It would make for a wonderfully colorful trip.

Tim Rice said...

Hi, san nakji. Oh, America is much more than blooming cacti; though blooming cacti are worthy plants to think of. :)

Hi, abandoned in pasadena. It would be neat to hit every state in the height of their blooming flowers though for some states that would mean going more than just once a year. :)

I missed this entry the first time around. I had the pleasure of spending a month boating the Grand Canyon in a wooden dory boat. At the time, all I had was my SLR 35mm camera and took about 400 pictures total. I spent a small fortunate to get the developed only to find out that about half of them were cacti blooms with many many repeats. I just kept seeing one more beautiful than the last and kept taking another picture. I keep promising myself that one of these days I'll go through my negatives and make prints or at least post them on my blog. One of these days....

Hi, ed abbey. I can relate to keep taking one more picture because each sight looks better or more beautiful than what was before.

And do sometime post some of your Grand Canyon pictures to your blog. I would love to see them.
