Deep Run East Mennonite Community Festival 2006

In 2004, my home church Deep Run East Mennonite started to hold community festivals in September each year. It's a time for us and the community to get to know each other in a social setting. And it's free to all who come. Below are pictures of some of the many activities. Our highschool youth group organizes it with the help of the associate pastor and recruits many of us adults to help staff the various play activities. It's a time to enjoy one another and have fun.

This is of course the dunking booth. Our pastor, associate pastor, junior youth leader, and one other person were in the dunking booth for one hour each. This year for the first hour I assisted with collecting the softballs that were repeatedly thrown. Last year, I was in the dunking booth for an hour.

Some activities for young children

Face painting

Soda ring toss

Beanbag toss

Bouncing fun

Car demolition activity

Each year we provide costumes for kids to dress up in and then provide them one photograph of their costume within minutes.

These two tables are almost all cookies and cupcakes provided by members of our church for the festival. We also provide free hotdogs and sloppy joes for all who come out.

That looked like a hoot of a good time for all - could those cookies have been calling my name? ec

Wow! I think I'm going to start a church tour and I'm hitting yours next if the hottie in the dunk tank's going to be there. Thanks for making my morning, Tim! :-)

next year you need to get back in the dunking booth and invite all your blog friends to come... maybe you can find a way to allow us to throw a virtual softball! Looks like great fun.

Hi, ava. I think everyone was having a great time.

Hi, mreddie. I bet those cookies were calling a lot of people's names but took too long to get to you. ;)

Hi, murf. What are we to do with you? ;)

Thanks, trailady. I think it's good for us as individuals and churches to take time to just enjoy and celebrate life as was happening in this festival.

Hi, charlie. So Baptists like to eat, too? :)

Thanks, sage. Being in the dunking booth can be lots of fun. But it can also be chilly when one is wet and up out in the air. Usually by September the temperature is only in the seventies with a rotating mixture of clouds and sun and a breeze blowing. But you are all invited to come next year in person. Virtually - too complicated and wouldn't be as much fun. :)

Tim - I've been asked that question numerous times and I don't think I or anyone else, have been able to answer it. :-)

I'm going to start getting my right arm in ball throwing form for next year.

It's nice to have a church large enough to have a festival...my church is running out of kids, and most of the congregation is older folks.....like me....lol and not to many of us left.....I do go to church with my daughter ever so often and it's huge, with tons of kids.....I love all the activity at that church.....my two granddaughters use to go to a Mennonite run school, in Indiana...

Hi, murf. You go right ahead and get in shape. :)

Hi, minka. Maybe, it's a man thing. Sometimes, us men just like to test ourselves to see how strong we are. Those old cars are all metal. You'd probably be surprise how hard it is to significantly demolish them. And it's fun to see power at work in a way that doesn't hurt people.

Thanks, judypatooote. I appreciate a church with all generations represented. There's something wholesome about that. But I also know that churches can struggle and sometimes find it hard to keep growing that way.

Car demolition? Wow! How fun would that be? I have a good mind to jump on a plane and get over there for that! Will I be too late?

Murf said...

Tim, I smell a dare. :-)

Tim Rice said...

Hi, san nakji. Sorry, you'll have to wait till next September now.

Hi, murf. I bet I don't have much to worry about. ;)

Murf said...

Oh, Tim...just wait. The only way you won't be dunked is if you don't write about it beforehand so that I don't put that into MY busy schedule....or I am too busy staring at the shirtless man from this years dunk tank.

What a great way to unite your communitity, Tim! I have always known Mennonites to be very socially conscious and "out-giving." What a great heritage to be a part of. I'm so proud of you :)

Car demolition activity must be very attractive, indeed.

I beg your pardon, is your pastor on the picture at the top ?

Oh ! Sorry, Tim, so sorry !
LOL !

Murf said...

I'm hoping the dunk tank hottie is 'one other person' because I'd feel a little odd about checking out a pastor of any level. :-)

Tim Rice said...

Thanks, ginnie. I'm glad for my Mennonite heritage. We're far from perfect; but we work at it.

Hi, cergie. Car demolition is an attractive event to many. And, no, that was not either of my pastors in the dunk tank though they were both in it at other times.

Hi, murf. I think you let too many outs on your commitment to the dare. ;) And I take it you are relieved to hear that it was not either of the pastors in the dunk tank photo. But that's funny!

A girl always has to have a couple of outs, Tim, and yes, I am glad to read that I haven't been oogling a pastor. ;-)
